In addition to our displays, exhibits, and research library, the Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society can offer other valuable assistance to historians, students, divers, genealogists, researchers, and those interested in our local history.

This web site is intended not only to convey useful information about our local marine history and heritage but to provide other researchers in the Great Lakes region with a sampling of some of the materials available in our holdings and collections.

LLMHS has an especially rich collection of images. We have many photos of lake boats, vessels, and other water craft from around the Great Lakes taken while in our ports. These photos, for example, could be very useful to a historian or researcher in Cleveland or Duluth.

It is our intention to eventually put more of our inventory on the web for easier browsing and research as time and future funding permit.
    Photography and Iconographic Reproductions
Our museum can offer a range of photographic and digitizing services to our fellow institutions and other potential users at nominal cost. We have the ability to digitally scan and print various media in various formats.

We have photo enlargers, ranging from 35mm to 8X10 inch, which give us the ability to make photo enlargements, again in various formats, to your specifications. We also have the capability to work with or from large format negatives.

LLMHS has experience with reproducing or creating images in very large sizes for displays, exhibits, and other special projects.

    Research Services
For those reseachers who can not physically visit our facility, our museum staff can provide certain research services for a reasonable fee. Some services are provided free of charge to qualified institutions or organizations.

For additional information, serious researchers are urged to contact the museum with the specific details and/or requirements of their projects.

    Genealogical Research Services
One of the many facets of researching Great Lakes history are the people involved. They are, after all, the driving force behind that history. At Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society we have made an effort to collect their history as well as the history of the vessels which they owned or sailed.

In many cases the information we have on individuals are excerpts extracted from the newspapers and/or other periodicals of the day. These articles may be as little as a mention of an individual aboard or a listing of the master of a particular vessel. Some of these articles are obituaries giving details of their life.

LLMHS has been steadily expanding a computerized database of accumulated genealogical information. A partial listing of unique SURNAMES and Surname/Given Names generated to date can be found by clicking here. Genealogical research services are also available for a reasonable fee.

For additional information, serious researchers are urged to contact the museum with the specific details and/or requirements of their projects.

    Research Library and Other Resources
Our research library, catalogs and indexes, holdings, collections, files, and other archives are available for on-site research during our normal hours of operation. Other hours and/or special requests are by pre-arranged appointment only.

    Museum Store
Our museum store is stocked with interesting items pertaining to our local area and the Great Lakes region and their history. The following list highlights some of the material available for sale at a reasonable cost:
    • Hard cover and paper back books and pamphlets
    • Artwork and lithographic reproductions
    • Past issues of the LLMHS "NewsLetter"
    • Boat plans
    • Gift items with a maritime theme

As our technology continually improves, we hope to make other services available in the future, such as the electronic transmission of high-resolution digital images. Other ideas that we are actively investigating include on-line searchable catalogs and indexes. We look forward to these developments and the opportunity to work with you.

The Lower Lakes Marine Historical Society is a tax exempt organization under both New York State and Federal laws (Sec. 501(c)(3)). Revenues from the sale of goods and services are used in part to fund the operations of the museum. LLMHS sincerely appreciates your patronage and support.
